The Royal

Originally built in 1894, The Royal was a former guest house of traditional stone construction, featuring decorative exterior mouldings, cornices, and chimneys. The project involved a sensitive change of use to create a modern family home, preserving the building’s historic character while introducing complementary modern extensions.

An attached one-bedroom cottage was transformed with a Scandinavian-inspired design, incorporating timber cladding and plywood linings, now serving as a stylish holiday let.

The project successfully balanced heritage conservation with contemporary living, creating a unique and functional family home with added holiday accommodation. The transformation was well-received by both the client and the local community.

Key Features:

  • Retention and restoration of original 19th-century architectural details
  • Modern extensions designed to complement the historic fabric
  • Scandinavian-style holiday cottage with timber and ply finishes
  • Seamless integration of old and new through thoughtful material choices

Annex development

As well as the main building development, we designed and built a side annex. This was designed to be used as a holiday home as additional living-space to the main home.
